Apartment/apartamento

This was our apartment in Matagalpa. It was on the second story of a building. It cost $100 a month. Other living expenses in Nicaragua (for two people) include electricity (about $30 a month) and water (about $5 a month). If you'd like, basic telephone service costs $12 a month. Basic internet service costs about $20 a month.

Este era nuestro apartamento en Matagalpa. Está en el segundo piso del edificio. Costó $100 mensualmente. Otros gastos mensuales (para dos personas) podría ser lo de la luz ($30 por mes) y agua ($5 por mes). Si les guste, telefonía básica cuesta $12 al mes. Servico básico de Internet cuesta alrededor de $20 al mes.

Drunkards/Borrachos

These guys pass many a moon on the sidewalk in front of the central park in Chinandega. The liquor finally dominated them and they won't be conscious again until the hot mid morning sun obliges them to groggily get up and move to the shade. Not fun....

Estos señores pasan muchas lunas en la cera frente al parque central de Chinandega. Les domó finalmente el guaro y no volverán a estar conscientes hasta el ardiente sol del casi medio día los obliga a ambular mariados hacia la sombra. No es una vida muy divertida....

Homeless woman/Mujer sin techo

This homeless woman passes her nights in the entrance to the Enitel building, right in from of Café Rosita en León.

Esta mujer sin techo pasa sus noches en la entrada del edificio Enitel, frente a Café Rosita en León.

Another piece of bread/otro pedazo de pan

I found another piece of bread on a yellow post outside of On the Run in Chinandega. Sheila (the bread's name) looks like the big sister to that other one that was here last week. I think I figured out why she was there...to attract customers to the store. Apparently it's working as you see the arrival of Chayanne. What a great day for this little piece of bread!!!





Hallé otro pedazo de pan encima de un poste amarillo fuera de On the Run en Chinandega. Sheila (su nombre) parece ser la hermana mayor del otro pan que estuvo aquí la semana pasada. Creo que sé porqué estaba allí...para atraer clientes a la tienda. Aparentemente funciona porque Chayanne llegó a la tienda a hacer compras, como se mira en la foto. ¡Que día maravilloso para esta pequeña pieza de pan!

McDonalds

Nicaragua has four McDonald's restaurants in Managua: in Plaza España, Plaza Inter, Bello Horizonte y Metrocentro. The prices are similar to US prices, perhaps just a bit cheaper. For example, a super-sized Big Mac combo costs C$88 (US$4.20). There are some offers that I have never seen in the U.S.: McDonald's fried chicken and the famous McFlurry with golden Oreos!!! Nicaragua tiene cuatro restaurantes McDonald''s: en Plaza España, Plaza Inter, Bello Horizonte y Metrocentro. Los precios son parecidos a EEUU, quizá un tantito más barato. Por ejemplo, un combo Big Mac agrandado cuesta C$88 (US$4.20). Hay unas ofertas que jamás he visto en EEUU: pollo frito de McDonalds y el famoso McFlurry con Oreos dorados!!! McDelicioso!

Lunch in Corinto/Almuerzo en Corinto

We went with our landlords, Roberto and Rosita Carrillo, on Thursday to have lunch.  By the way, they have the best clothing stores in Chinandega - La Elegancia #1 and #2.  Stop in for some great deals on really good clothing! We went to Paso Caballos (Corinto) and ate at the Español.  Note the excellent seafood!!!  The medium fried fish cost $C165 (US$8.25).   The sea bass filet in garlic butter cost C$175 (US$8.50); the fried shrimp with garlic butter or mayonnaise cost C$245 (US$12.25).  The seafood soup cost C$170 (US$8.50) and is a serving double of what is pictured.  Not the cheapest but umm umm good!

Fuimos con los dueños de nuestra casa, Roberto y Rosita Carrillo, para el almuerzo el jueves.  A propósito, ellos son dueños de las 2 mejores tiendas de ropa de Chinandega - La Elegancia #1 y #2.  Pasen a ver su excelente selección y buenos precios!!  Fuimos a Paso Caballos (Corinto) y comimos en el restaurante El Español.  Miren los mariscos!!!!  El pescado frito tomaño mediano costó $C165 (US$8.25).  La corvina al ajillo costó C$175 (US$8.50).  Los camarones fritos con salsa de ajo con mantequilla y una salsa de mayonesa costó C$245 (US$12.25).  La sopa de mariscos costó C$170 (US$8.50) para una porción doble de lo que se mira en la foto.  No tan barata esta comida pero mmm mmm rica!!!

Cold winds rolling in/Llegan los vientos frios

One of the few times cold air is seen in the Chinandega area, coming down the side of the San Cristobal volcano.

Piece of bread/pedazo de pan

This piece of bread was sitting on the yellow protective post outside of the On The Run in Chinandega, Nicaragua. What was it doing all alone? Who put it there? There are a lot of unanswered questions...but he did make it to this blog. This might be an upstart for him. What could we name him?

Aquí está un pedazo de pan, sentadito en un poste de protección amarillo, en las afueras de la tienda On The Run en Chinandega, Nicaragua. ¿Qué andaba haciendo allí solito? ¿Quién lo puso allí? Hay muchas incógnitas...pero sí logró salir en este blog. Quizá sea solo un buen comienzo para él. ¿Que nombre le ponemos?

This woman and her little (and I mean little - 6 months to a year old) girl were cruising down the adoquin street in León this morning. The baby was chillin' while she held on for dear life. The woman was looking around, obviously proud of her invention...

Esta mujer y la pequeña (quiero decir muy chiquita - quizá 6 meses hasta un año de edad) muchachita estaban paseando por las calles adoquinadas de León, hoy mismo por la mañana. La muchachita andaba tranquilita, agarrada por cierto de las dos manos. La mujer miraba a los transuentes, aparentemente orgullosa de su invento....

Gas prices in Nicaragua/precios de combustible en Nicaragua

Here at the Texaco in León, Nicaragua, you can see gas that prices are not cheap. A liter of diesel is C$17.26 ( about $0.85 a liter). Multiply that by about 3.78 and you have diesel at $3.20 a gallon. Now let's talk about gasoline: C$19.98 * 3.78 = $3.67 a gallon. That hurts!!! At least the guy still puts it in for you...and if you fill up, they even clean your windows.

Aquí en León, Nicaragua en la Texaco, podés ver que el combustible no está muy barato. Un litro de diesel cuesta C$17.26 (US$0.85 por litro). Multiplica el litro por 3.78 y sale un galón a $3.20. Hablemos de la gasolina: C$19.98 * 3.78 = $3.67 por galón. ¡Duele eso! Por lo menos el hombre te la bombea...y si echás bastante, haste te limpia los cristales.

Coke bottle/botella de Coca-cola

You can still drink an ice cold Coca-Cola from a glass bottle here in Nicaragua. They run about C$8 (US$0.40) for the 12 onzer. It's better without a straw, straight from the top of the bottle. You can't take the bottle with you though....
En Nicaragua todavía se sirve una Coca-cola bien helada en botellas de vidrio. Cuesta C$8 (US$0.40) para 12 onzas. Sabe mejor sin la pajilla, directa de la boca de la botella. Sin embargo, no podés llevarte la botella....

Tacos LaSalle

We stopped for the famous LaSalle tacos, made on the street corner of the school with the same name in León. They are served up fresh as you ask for them...a rolled up tortilla with their secret chicken mix inside, deep fried and then topped with cabbage, cream and a lime, onion and chile pepper salad. I washed mine down with an orange Fanta and a Coca-cola. We ate with Karl and Tiffany. The 10 tacos (3,3,2,2) and 5 sodas cost a mere $C130 (US$6.50). Karl Lamy, Tiffany Lamy

Pasamos a comer los famosos tacos LaSalle, hechos en la esquina del colegio con el mismo nombre en León. Los hacen cuando uno los pide...una tortilla enrollado con un pollo especial preparado, frito y luego te echan repollo, crema y cebolla con chile y limón. Yo también tomé dos gaseosas: una Fanta naranja y un Coca-cola. Comimos con Karl y Tiffany. Los 10 tacos (3,3,2,2) y 5 gaseosas costaron solamente $C130 (US$6.50).

Mexican food in León/Comida mexicana en León

We ate supper with Yahoska in a little Mexican "restaurant" about one block away from Hotel Perla. It's a small hole in the wall type place but had some surprisingly authentic Mexican food. I ordered chilaquiles (C$60 - about $3) and a big boy beverage - Toña (normally about $C15 - $0.75). It was good! Worth heading south of the border for this chow!!!! 

Fuimos a comer con Yahoska en un pequeño lugar "mexicano" cerca del Hotel Perla. No es muy grande pero para nuestro agrado y sorpresa comimos unos platos bastante auténticos. Yo pedí chilaquiles (C$60 - casi $3) y una bebida para adultos ($C15 - $0.75). ¡¡Que rico!! Bueno para gozar....

Assistant mayor/Vice alcaldesa

Say hi to Santitos Roque, the assistant mayor of León. Apparently she is not a fan of some of the locals. Like someone asked me: "That's a woman isn't it?"

Saluden a Santitos Roque, la vice alcaldesa de León. Por lo visto no les cae bien a todos los locales. Me preguntó alguien : "Esa es una mujer, ¿verdad?"
